ABOVE THE LAW

OGUTA JUDE

INTRODUCTION
With his vast technological know-how, man can break out of earth’s gravity and reach the moon and even explore outer space; yet he cannot in his own strength breakout of the spiritual gravity of his sinful nature and get in touch and tune with God. He has no power over the thrust of temptation, the grip of sin, the approach of death and the certainty of judgment.

Man’s basic problem is not knowing how he ought to live; it is lacking the power to live as he ought. There is an invisible force that controls his actions sometimes contrary to his will. But just like scientists with their airplanes circumvent the law of Gravity every minute around the globe you too can be free from the spiritual gravity of sin. This is how…

Understanding Laws
In about 350B.C., the Greek philosopher Aristotle propounded “the Principle of Causality” that has come to be recognized as the foundation law of Western philosophy and Western thought. He said that we live in an orderly universe, governed by great unchanging laws. He insisted that there is a reason for everything that happens whether we know the law or principle behind it or not.

Creation has been governed with the iron hand of fixed laws, empirical science have come to recognize and utilize these laws. Note that scientists don’t manufacture knowledge, they only DIS-COVER it. Isaac Newton for instance discovered gravity that had existed thousands of years before he was born. The prefix “dis” means to “remove”. In other words, the knowledge was there but covered, scientists only remove the cover or dis-cover it. The Bible sheds some light on this
“ It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter”1

Gravity vs. Aerodynamic
One of those laws governing this universe is the law of gravity, discovered by the 17th century English scientist-Sir Isaac Newton. This law posits that every object is pulled to the earth by a force known as the force of gravity. On this law is the foundation of the truism that anything that goes up must come down.

The Law of gravity held men to the ground for thousands of years until the Wright Brothers (sons of Bishop Milton Wright) defied it. Their father had preached that only angels could fly, but this whiz kids were set to prove him wrong. And on December 17, 1903, Orville Wright and his brother Wilbur made the first successful flight of a piloted, heavier-than-air flying machine. Through that breakthrough in flying, man has not just gone to the moon, but have conquered space; all in spite of gravity.

This brings us to the conclusion that the law of gravity is universal until you get on an airplane. The Wright brothers didn’t eradicate the law of gravity. They rendered it inoperative by the operation of a higher law called aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is the combined forces of lift and drag that overpowers gravity and thrust-the two forces holding the plane down. If that higher law for any reason stops working, if an object falls from the plane, the object will tumble to the ground because the first law isn’t dead. With these understanding, let us see how we are made free from the power of sin.

The Gravity of Sin
Since Adam’s sin, all men have been born subject to the force of sin2. When sin entered the human race, it caused an infection to spread to all mankind3. This was not a physical infection. It was a spiritual and moral infection. The “sin virus” infected the thinking process of everyone. To use a computer analogy, everyone who is born into this world is born with a defective chip. This chip infects the life with a moral virus that is selfish and self-centred. It is this inner spring of sin that propels a little child to actual sin, even before he knows the bounds of moral law.

Personal effort alone can’t break one free from the gravitational pull of sin in his/her live. Paul narrates his own struggle to break free
“For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no the evil I do not want to do-this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who want to do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: when I want to do good, evil is right there with me”4

Sin often leads to slavery5. It becomes habitual, addictive and controlling. This is why it is often so difficult to break free from the repeated practices of sin in our lives – even those practices that we desperately want to leave behind. We can see from above that Paul discovered that sin was not just an act but a law like the law of gravity. Sometimes I question the doctrine that says that man is a free moral agent because in actuality our will is being influenced by spiritual forces, good or bad. And most people are actually in chains against their will. But he made a second discovery that granted him freedom.

The Law Of The Spirit Of Life
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and of death. Romans 8:2

As much as the law of aerodynamics teaches us that our presence in a certain shaped vehicle that is operating a certain way will keep us above the law of gravity and thus defy the law of gravity, we can defy the law of sin and death. And this higher law, the law that nullifies sin and death, is called the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. We must be in Christ as much as one would need to be in an airplane to escape the law of gravity. And we are in Christ by having faith in His death for us!

We are not saved by our morality or baptism, it is believing in Christ that sets us free. I do not care how utterly destroyed your life has descended toward death. The very moment you will completely surrender to the Spirit of life in Jesus Christ you will begin the supernatural transformation He has provided. The most desperate character, the man farthest away from God and deepest in sin, can be rescued through the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And so long as we rely upon God to deliver us through faith in the fact that we died with Christ, we remain above the law of sin and death above the law that has kept humanity in bondage for thousand of years

When you combine the combustion of the Holy Spirit with the speed of obedience and the airflow of holiness, you’re automatically lifted to a new plane of spiritual life because the power of the spirit working in you transcends the law of sin and death.
